How we use your survey answers

Who we are

The survey at survey.sourcework.dev is run by Matthew Silver, trading as SourceWork, in the United Kingdom. Matthew Silver is the controller of the personal data collected through it.

What we collect

• Your survey answers. Which side you chose (hiring engineers, or an engineer who interviews) and your answers, including anything you type into the free-text questions. Please don’t include other people’s personal details in those answers.
• Contact details, only if you give them. Your name, work email and company. They’re required only if you ask for the results report or early access, and optional otherwise.
• What you asked for. Whether you ticked the results report, early access or neither.
• Technical details of the submission. A random response ID, the time your browser sent it and the version of the survey. Our providers also see your IP address and browser details when you load the survey or send it, as part of hosting and bot protection.

You don’t need to give your name or email to take part. Even without them, a response isn’t fully anonymous: your free-text answers and the technical details above could, in principle, relate to you.

Why we use it, and on what basis

• To understand how technical hiring works and decide what SourceWork builds, using your survey answers. Our lawful basis is legitimate interests: researching the problem before building a product, in a way you’d expect when you take a research survey.
• To send you the results report and early-access invitation, if you ask for them, using your name and email. Our lawful basis is your consent, which you can withdraw at any time by emailing us. Asking for the report doesn’t sign you up for early access, and neither signs you up for anything else.
• To keep out spam and automated submissions, using Cloudflare Turnstile. Our lawful basis is legitimate interests: protecting the survey and the quality of its results.

We don’t sell your data, use it for advertising, or add you to a mailing list. The results report shares only combined findings; it won’t identify you or your company.

Who else handles it

These providers process data for us, under their terms and data protection agreements:

• Formspark receives and stores submitted responses and sends us a notification for each one. Formspark privacy policy
• Cloudflare hosts the survey and runs Turnstile, which checks the browser is used by a person before a response is accepted. Cloudflare privacy policy
• Microsoft 365 provides our email, used to receive notifications and send the report and invitations, and Excel, used to analyse exported responses. Microsoft privacy statement

Some of these providers may process data outside the UK. Where they do, they provide the safeguards UK data protection law requires for international transfers.

How long we keep it

• Contact details are deleted once we’ve sent the results report and early-access invitations, and no later than 12 months after the survey closes.
• Survey answers are kept for up to 24 months after the survey closes, for research, then deleted.
• Unfinished answers are saved only in your own browser, so you can come back to them. They’re removed when you submit, when you choose “Clear saved answers”, or after 30 days. We never receive them unless you submit.

Your rights

You can ask for a copy of your data, ask us to correct or delete it, restrict or object to how we use it, or withdraw your consent. Email hello@sourcework.dev. If you didn’t leave contact details, tell us roughly when you took the survey and a few of your answers so we can find your response; without them we may not be able to.

If you’re unhappy with how we’ve handled your data, you can complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO), the UK regulator: ico.org.uk/make-a-complaint. We’d appreciate the chance to put things right first.

Changes

If this notice changes, we’ll update the version and date above. Each response records the version that was shown when it was sent.
